Iraq war - my 2 cents

OK, time to put into writing what I've felt about the Iraq war.

First and foremost - I have always believed it was a huge mistake to go into Iraq. Also, I firmly believe we were misled by the Bush administration about the reasons we needed to go to Iraq.

However, now that we're over there, I think it would be immoral to pull out now - that country would fall into total chaos and untold numbers of lives lost if we pulled out now. Unfortunately, we have to stay there for the foreseeable future. This really sucks, and I hold Bush accountable for this mess we're in.

What purpose does this war serve? According to Bush, you het a different answer depending on how well his arguments are holding. Most recently, they argue that the war in Iraq is part of the war on terror.

I contend that Iraq had nothing to do with gloabl terror - or Al Quaeda - prior to our invasion of Iraq. That country was run by a regional tyrant (Hussein) who had reluctantly given up all his weapons of mass destruction.

Also, Hussein was secular, whereas Al Quaeda is fundamentally Islamic. Because of this, the two NEVER conspired together. Hence, Iraq in 2003 was never a threat to anybody but its own people.

Iraqi's don't want what we call democracy - Muslims freely give up their liberty in deference to their religion - the same holds true for their governments. They'd rather sacrifice their own liberty in order to have a strong Islamic state that could stand up to Israel and the US. Hence, our attempt to introduce democracy to Iraq will inecvitably backfire.

Just how much it will backfire is still in question. However, my biggest fear is that the Shiite majority of Iraq will team up with the government of Iran to produce a huge Islamic state with the military might of Iran, the incredible oil riches of both Iran and Iraq, and the gigantic regional presence, that could easily expand into Afghanistan, Syria, Saudia Arabie and Lebanon (Hizbollah)

Hence, Bush's misguided attempt to introduce democracy to the mideast may backfire in such a prfound way as to single-handedly give a very large chunk of the mideast over to a fundamentalist Islamic regime hell-bent on destroying Israel and hurting western interests in every chance it can find. In the worst case scenario, Iran becomes a regional superpower. If so, then Bush has got to be labelled one of the WORST presidents of all time, making such a fucking moronic mistake as trying to impose democracy where it isn't wanted and thereby setting the stage for a radical fundamentalist Islamic regime to take over most of the mideast.

Another scenario is that the US becomes entagled in mideast military action for years to come (decades?) in its attempt to keep Iran's ambitions intact. This, too, reflects very poorly on Bush - it was his misguided war in Iraq that will allow Iran to run rampant through the mideast unless we stop it - AT INCREDIBLE TAXPAYER EXPENSE AND COST OF US LIVES. If he never attacked Iraq, the need to keep Iran in check never materializes. Hence the cost of the Iraq war - already in 2006 staggering - will continue to sap the US economy for years to come. All of this is the fault of one George W. Bush, Chief Moron.

Sorry, I'm short on references and/or details for my claims. I'll try to fill some in later.
